"Harnessing the Unknown: Powering the Future through Science and Innovation"

The 2025 National Science Month celebration, anchored on the theme “Harnessing the Unknown: Powering the Future through Science and Innovation,” invites us to reflect on the critical role of curiosity, foresight, and creativity in shaping tomorrow’s society. The phrase “harnessing the unknown” suggests that what we don’t yet fully understand whether in nature, technology, or human systems holds immense potential. Rather than shunning uncertainty, the theme challenges researchers, learners, and communities to lean into it, turning questions into drivers for progress. In the Philippine context, the Department of Education and local science clubs have already begun organizing contests, exhibits, and outreach programs to make this theme more tangible across schools.  Over the next few decades, the relationship between science and society must deepen into a more reciprocal, interdependent partnership. Science and innovation are not merely tools for economic growth or prestige; the...

Climate Change and Resiliency of Filipinos

Image
The Philippines is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. The archipelagic geography, extensive coastlines, and dependence of many communities on climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture and fisheries make it especially exposed to both sudden disasters (typhoons, intense rainfall) and progressive environmental changes (sea-level rise, changing rainfall patterns).  One of the predominant reasons behind these adverse environmental changes is the combined effect of greenhouse gas emissions and land use changes. The Philippines, while contributing only a small fraction of global emissions, still relies heavily on coal, oil, and nonrenewable energy sources for power generation. Deforestation for logging, agricultural expansion, and urbanization further reduce the capacity of forests to absorb CO₂, while increasing soil erosion, disrupting water cycles, and weakening natural defenses against storms and floods.  Another key driver is changing rainfall patterns a...

Intramurals

Image
Intramurals is one of the most enjoyable events in school because it allows students to showcase their skills, talents, and teamwork. It is not only about winning games but also about having fun, building confidence, and strengthening school spirit. Through sports like basketball, students learn discipline, patience, and the importance of fair play. This event also teaches the value of teamwork and unity. In basketball, for example, every player must do their part and cooperate with one another to achieve victory. It shows that success is not achieved individually, but through the effort and support of the whole team. It also helps develop friendships and stronger bonds among classmates. Overall, intramurals is more than just a competition, it is a meaningful activity that promotes health, discipline, and camaraderie. It gives students the chance to enjoy, learn valuable lessons, and create memories that will remain with them even beyond school.
