The 2025 National Children’s Month in the Philippines.

The Philippines' 2025 National Children's Month theme is "OSAEC-CSAEM Wakasan: Kaligtasan at Karapatan ng Bata, Ipaglaban!" effectively draws attention to the pressing need to eradicate child sexual abuse or exploitation materials (CSAEM) and online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC). This theme demonstrates a keen understanding of the changing risks that kids face in the digital age, particularly given the sharp increase in internet access among Filipino kids. The fact that numerous government organizations, local administrations, and civil society organizations are uniting under this banner to demonstrate that defending the rights, safety, and dignity of children is still a top priority for the country is encouraging.

From my viewpoint, the government’s role in safeguarding children is multi-faceted and evolving, yet still full of challenges. On the positive side, the legal framework is becoming stronger: for instance, Republic Act 11930, the OSAEC Act, provides a concrete statutory basis for protecting children against abuse in digital spaces. Moreover, local government units are conducting awareness seminars, cyber-safety trainings, and partnering with barangay councils to reach children at the grassroots. For example, in Davao City the city’s child protection office noted the importance of seminars on cyber safety at the barangay level. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that children grow up “in an environment that is safe, secure, and nurturing” as declared in the theme.

However, my reflection is that while frameworks and awareness are consolidating, the implementation still needs deepening. For instance, children themselves have called for stronger implementation of laws and more effective digital literacy and parental guidance. With internet usage among children rising (e.g., a 2024 figure indicated 67% of persons aged 10+ accessed the internet, averaging 4.6 hours/day) the risk landscape is increasing. Therefore, the government’s challenge now is not only to pass laws or launch campaigns, but to operationalize them in everyday life: ensuring reporting mechanisms work, that law enforcement is equipped, that guardianship of children in digital spaces is effective, and that children in remote or disadvantaged areas are equally protected.

In conclusion, the 2025 celebration marks an important milestone: not just a commemoration, but a call to action. The theme reminds us that children’s safety and rights must be actively fought for. The government’s role is indispensable: from crafting laws, allocating resources, working with local units and communities, to monitoring and enforcing protections. As someone aspiring to a caring profession like nursing, I believe that every sector health, education, social welfare has a part to play in this fight. Ultimately, it is through coordinated, persistent efforts that we can hope to see a Philippines where every child enjoys dignity, safety and the full exercise of their rights.
